Early Public Transportation in Hawaii
Mule Drawn  Hawaiian Tramways 1888 -1903

Animal drawn transportation required animal care, feeding and rest. Electric energy became a more efficient method than mules.

HRT&L Electric Trolley Cars

August 31, 1901 the Dynamos started producing electricity for a new era.

Iron wheeled trolleys could not navigate steep hills and required expensive effort to change or add routes. The rubber tired buses became more versatile.

Trolley Buses replaced the rail bound trolleys in the 40's

The rubber tires made the ride smoother than the rails, but if the driver missed a turn and got off the route
where the wires were a tow truck had to be called.

NOTE: The tracks are of two different guages and the train looks like a truck!
