The vehicle tunnel entering the crater was built in 1940.
The historic trail to the summit was constructed in 1908. 

The winch was used to lift building materials during construction.

Makapuu Lighthouse Hike

 The hike to Makapuu is relatively easy, park along the road and walk in, about 1.5 miles. The highest point of 647 feet is NOT the point overlooking the Lighthouse. The high point is inland of the lookout, most people do not climb the last (no clear trail) portion (the lower right picture overlooks the site from the top). The walk to the lookout climbs around 500 feet via. a blacktop lighthouse maintenance access road. The lookout and a point about 2/3 of the way up are vistas for whale watching.
