Chinese New Year
It is said, there was once a ferocious beast called Nian who could swallow several people with one bite.
One day a man appeared and told the people to paint their houses red and set off fire-crackers because Nian disliked the color red and was afraid of loud noises. When Nian came that night it was scared away.
Traditions
Children are given Laisee (lucky money).
Laisee always comes in red envelopes.
Homes are cleaned before New Year to clense the house of ill fortune, but NO cleaning may be done on New Years or it may sweep away the good luck that comes with the New Year.
The end of the 15 day festival is marked by the
"Lantern Festival"
