When I starter this site over 10 years ago in 1997, most people including myself were using dial up modems. Pictures contain a lot of data and take longer to load than text. Now most people are using some form of wideband (DSL or CABLE) modems. Digital photography was not in vogue and when I started the site and was not too good. Over the years the quality of the digital pictures got much better but so did ther size (data) increase. Many of my earlier pictures are 3 megapixels or lower. Now with 12 megapixel pictures they are too big for a computer screen, but I have been adding larger pictures to my older presentations.

The information & pictures found within this website are the property of Donald F. Buote and may not be used for comercial purposes without my permission.

You may already know this, or may just not care, but I have been asked to define some of these terms from time to time.

  • To find places on the Internet you type information into the bar near the top of the browser page, called the Uniform Resource Locator(URL). The internet defines computers (web sites) with an Internet Protocall address (IP). This is a series of four, three digit numbers that look like this (206.126.0.254) each is separated by a dot. They are hard to remember so the Internet designers created a way to type in words that would hopefully be easier to remember. When those names are typed into the URL. Then the Domain Name Server (DNS)  your computer accesses (another computer normally assigned by your Internet Service Provider [ISP]), equates that name with those numbers and routes your connection request to the correct computer.
OK so why did I create a web site?

My thoughts on creating a personal Web Site

1. Start with a table

This helps to keep things in order.

2.  Graphics
Graphics take a long time to load especially animated gif's. These "neat things" tend to eventually make the page gaudy. When I first started this page I had at least 6 more animated objects. From stand alone creation  on the development system things loaded fast, but over the web they slowed drastically. Then when I looked at it with a critical eye I knew it was over done.

  3. Links
If there are links that are not visually evident, let the viewer know how to find them. Also create some links to other sites you may visit. Then change or add to them in the future, also change the site from time to time, or people will say "been there done that".

  4. EMBED
I tried embeding audio and video. The video file is large and takes more than 4 times as long to load as to play. They are by nature large files and take a lot of server space. Audio .wav files are also large and loading time is also long. MIDI files on the other hand are small and load fast.
